Biographical Notes |
Note: Charles and his brother George emigrated to South Australia by the "Arab", Capt. Joseph Dalgarno, which left the Downs, Kent on 3 Oct 1842 and arrived at Port Adelaide 23 Jan 1843. It was a "bad" ship, that is a captain who treated the passengers in such a way that the "South Australian Register" dated 28 Jan 1843 published a long account of complaints of both cabin and steerage passengers of the ill conditioned victualling and ill treatment of all aboard. Both Charles and George signed. The brothers joined their uncle John Stewart Johnston on his farm at "Turkunga", Bull's Creek, near Strathalbyn. Their uncle had arrived in 1839. Charles was aged 20 and George was 17.
The brothers had their early farming experience at Bull's Creek, followed by Wellington where there was a crossing of the Murray River, still with the uncle. He left with his family for N.S.W. and the Knights were then at Guichen Bay. By 1851 they were in partnership north of Strathalbyn. They parted in 1852 when George married and became the owner of his wife's farm inherited from her first husband.
