Biographical Notes |
Note: Colin had a varied career as farmer and grazier and it was his misfortune not to grow as prosperous as some of his brothers. He worked hard enough, but never succeeded. He commenced at "The Pines", Grenfell with 500 acres of his father's land but his crops failed, and his sheep did not flourish. In the 1930's Colin sold back to his father and tried again at "Fernhill", Kootingal, near Tamworth where E.M.S. and her cousin Allen Wilson who were both with the airforce at Tamworth in 1944 were guests at weekends on a number of occasions. As well as general farming Colin was breeding show horses. Soon after W.W.2 ended they left Kootingal for Womboyne Plain, Mendooran, then to "Willow Farm", Courtegany via Cooma, N.S.W. Next came Kalounora, Woorie Yallock, Victoria followed by a short time in Tasmania.
From Old Don Road, Launching Place, Victoria where Colin was manager he and Naomi went to the far north west to Koolan Island, 90 miles out from Derby, Western Australia in 1965. Their second son Hugh was the resident First Aid Officer at Koolan, there being no doctor on the Island and until August 1967 Colin was employed there by Broken Hill Proprietory in charge of stores. The island was at the time leased by B.H.P. for mining. On their way back to N.S.W. to stay with daughter Anne at Nimmitabel, Naomi and Colin stayed at Clarence Park, S.A. with E.M.S. and mother. As E.M.S. was suffering from bronchial pneumonia the occasion was somewhat marred.
The Knights next took a position at Mt. Aubrey, Boldry, N.S.W., a sheep property again managing, but found their employer too difficult to endure and left in December 1968. They decided to retire.
They chose Bermagui South, a fishing community in southern N.S.W. and built at Mill Street. Naomi, ever a hopeful and usually a successful gardener did battle with salt laden winds. In 1976 they celebrated their Golden Wedding at a grand party given for a large number of relatives and friends at Camden, Sydney where son Logan held the licence of a hotel. After this highly successful and enjoyable time, Colin who suffered increasingly from arthritis, was hospitalized several times. Contact was lost after a last letter from Colin to E.M.S. in 1983. and none of hers received replies so it must be presumed that both Colin and Naomi died in the 1980s.
