Shep's Place Family Tree

In 1850 Moses, 34, and Jane, 35, have five children at home in Letart: Miriam A. 9, Thomas 7, George B. 5, Harrison 3, and Daniel 8 months.

By 1860 Moses has died, leaving Jane at 45 years, as head of household. She has at home Mary A. ‎(Miriam or Mide)‎ 19, school teacher; Thomas 17, farm laborer; George 15, farm laborer; Harrison, 13, Daniel, 11, David, eight, and Mary, six. John W. Hayman 17 was a farm laborer. A farm, no husband, seven children!

In 1870 Jane is 50 years and keeping house, while George, 23, back from the Civil War, is the farmer. His brother Harry is helping with the farm work. David, 18, and Mary, 16, are going to school. Daniel, 20, is working on his great-uncle Thomas's farm.

In 1880 Jane is 65 and keeping house. George B., 33, is an engineer, presumably on a boat; Harrison, 31, works on a boat; David A., 27, is a teacher; and Mary E., 24, is "without occupation."
