By the census in 1871, John's wife had died, leaving him with a large family of nine children to care for: William 21, Sarah Elizabeth 20, Robert John 18, Annie 17, Elizabeth Eliza 15, John Harvey, Jr, 13, Richard Walter 11, Jane seven and Laura six. Sarah, the eldest daughter, had become the house keeper.

At that time John's occupation was paper maker, as were Robert and Elizabeth. Annie worked at the paper mill. Everyone but Robert had been born in Sawston. Robert was born in Kent at Footscray, or Marys Cray. Very interestingly, John Harvey Jr's occupation was "Pupil Teacher," which is rather confusing. Perhaps he taught his younger siblings, Richard, Jane and Laura.

By 1881 John 53 had remarried Caroline 50, a widow who also lived in Sawston, and they had had two children of their own: Oliver four and Fred eight. Also in the household was Charles Doughton, 15, paper factory hand, who is Caroline's son by a previous marriage.

In the 1891 census of Sawston, John 63 is still a paper maker; and Caroline 56 has her daughter Emily Doughton 29 and single living with them plus son Oliver 14, a "School Teacher." There were also four male lodgers.
