Note: In 1850 the Knight family lived in Mason County, Virginia, which would become West Virginia after the Civil War. Rebecca was seven years old in a family of seven children.
In 1865 the first public school opensed in Hartford WV. When she was 19 or 20 years old, Miss Rebecca Knight, called "Miss Becky," taught the younger girls at one end of the building.
After her father George Knight died in 1868. Elizabeth Kirk Knight moved her family to Hartford [presumably from a farm in the country]. Rebecca was living at the home of James and Sarah Meeks with her mother Elizabeth 66 and brothers George 33, a cooper and Samuel 30, a carpenter. In about three months Rebecca will be establishing her own home when she marries Manly Brown.
