Biographical Notes

Hide Details Note: In the 1910 census report a Harry B. Hughes lived in Ceredo, West Virginia with his family. His father's initials were P.S. and his mother's first name was California. Harry was twenty years old and a telegraph operator, which makes me think that this is our Harry. At that time there were three siblings besides Harry: George, Walter and Francis.

The Harry B. Hughes family lived in McMechen when Harry signed the World War One draft registration form. From that we learn that his middle name is Braden. He was 27 years old, worked for Western Union Telegraph Company and had a wife and three-year-old son.

In 1920 Harry was "wire chief" for Western Union Telegraph Company. Their young son Edward was six years old. Helen's parents were living with them: Eddie was 54 years and Millie 47. I wonder why they didn't have a home of their own. The family resided at Lincoln Street.

From Harry's World War Two draft registration card we learn that their address was 618 Lincoln in McMechen, and that Harry worked for Western Union Telegraph Company in Wheeling, West Virginia.

In 1930 Harry Hughes aged 40 years was still the wire chief for the telegraph company. He and Helen aged 36 lived in McMechen, Ohio with their son Edward aged 16 and Helen's parents, Eddie and Millie Brown. Edward was in school. The Hughes's owned their own home which was worth $6,000.00. They did not own a radio.
