Note: J. Morris, like his father, was a strong Baptist and one of the best workers in the church. He worked for the Hartford City Salt and Coal Company most of his life. He was a graduate of Dennison (now Dennison University, and stayed on as a teacher of Greek and Latin for a while; but he wanted to get married, so he came back to work in the salt industry where he could make more money. Morris was seventeen times elected a member of the town council, and was at least one time elected recorder. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. and was once State Grand Master. He was a devoted family man, very kind and gentle, and lived his religion every day of his life.
