Ten years later but still in Lamerton, Roger was 23 years old and living at home with his parents William and Anna. Willliam was a farmer with 55 acres of land. Anna was 46 years old and had eight children to feed and clothe. The family lived at 2 Headwell. The other members of the large Percy family were Richard 21, Harriet 16, Anne 12, Thomas ten, William seven, Jesse ‎(a girl)‎ five, and Rhoda three.

The Percys sailed to South Australia on the "Thomas Arbuthnot", arriving in 1855. William, who was in his fifties at that time, worked as a labourer. The family settled in Gawler, South Australia. Their religion was Church of England.
