Biographical Notes |
Note: William was the subject of a death notice in the Adelaide, South Australia weekly newspaper The Observer on 12 February 1859. He had died on 6 February at Mr. Gouge's, Hindley Street from cerous apoplexy, and was said to be a stable keeper aged 64 years. There was no hint that he had any relatives in South Australia. From The Observer for 8 May 1852 it revealed that he had been a cabin passenger on the "Caroline Agnes," which had just arrived from England. The South Australian Government Gazette for 17 February 1859 referred to William Buttfield, formerly of Broughton, Buckinghamshire, who had died intestate in Adelaide. It called for any objections to the grant of Letters of Administration to Robert Brown, farmer of Yankalilla, South Australia, and his wife, Sarah (Buttfield), sister to William.
The final link in the chain appeared in the Biographical Index of South Australians published by the S.A. Genealogy and Heraldry Society Inc. in 1986. In reference to Robert Brown, is said that his wife Sarah was the daughter of Mrs. Buttfield nee Fanny Clayton. The informant appeared to know nothing of Sarah's father, who must have been William Buttfield.
Since William was younger than his brother John, who was born in 1803, the age of 64 in the death notice was several years too great. Perhaps it was a guess based on the appearance of a man in ill heath.
