Biographical Notes |
Note: James can also be linked to William Buttfield (1778-1811) and his wife Fanny because of the name Clayton. On 15 March 1834 the Archdeaconry of Buckinghamshire granted a licence to James Buttfield of Broughton to Marry Emma Smith of Newport Pagnell. The marriage took place at Broughton on 18 Marcy 1834. The only baptism of a child of this couple which has been found is that of a daughter, Mercy, at Newport Pagnell on 8 Apri 1840; however, the 1861 census report for Emberton, North Buckinghamshire gives a bigger picture: James Buttfield, postal messenger, aged 49 born at Broughton Bucks..; wife Emma, aged 49, born at Kettering, Northants. A daughter Mary Anne, dressmaker, 19 years, born at Newport Pagnell 1842; sons John, agricultural labourer aged 15; and Albert J., agricultural labourer aged 12--both born at Newport Pagnell; a daughter Emma M., scholar aged 10, born at Newport Pagnell; and a son Clayton, scholar, aged six, born at Sherington, Buckinghamshire.
