Biographical Notes

Hide Details Note: Thomas was born in the Parish of St John in Westminster ‎(London)‎ about 1835; however by the 1841 English census, his family had moved to Hertfordshire where they lived in the Hatfield Park Keeper's Lodger in Bishop Hatfield. His father Thomas was a carpenter.

Thomas' siblings were Augusta 15, Ann 13, George four and Susan six weeks. Sarah Gutteridge, who was 68 years and probably Martha's mother, was a school mistress who had been born in Hertfordshire.

In 1851 he was 15 years old and living at home in Hatfield Park, Herts., with his parents, three sisters--Augusta, Ann and Susannah-- and brother George. At that time Thomas was a carpenter's apprentice.

Ten years later in 1861 at the age of 25, Thomas was a master carpenter and builder who lived on his own in the village of Essendon, near Hatfield. Sometime during this year he married Sarah Surguy in London.

Now married in 1871, Thomas, 36 years, was a lodger at the Angel Hotel on Bridge Street in Ely, Cambridgeshire. His occupation was surveyor, possibly a temporary assignment. Sarah and the children were living in London.

The occupations of others in his area were railway porter, bookbinder, dress maker, boat wright, laundress, publican, ostler, housemaid and cook.

Thomas came to South Australia aboard the "Hesperus" in 1878. He was a builder and architect who lived in Adelaide and Nairne, South Australia. His religion was Church of England.
