Biographical Notes

Hide Details Note: In the 1891 English census Muriel's father, Philip Saunders, 40 years, worked as a gardner in Stretford, Lancashire. Her mother Adeleve Jane 39 years had a young daughter at home, Agnes Muriel who was seven years old.

Boarding with the family was 25-year Fanny McDonald, who worked as a confectioners' assistant. Fanny was from Manchester.

Some of the other occupations on their street were office boy, fish salesman wholesale, general servant and clerk in newspaper office. The other names mentioned were Moss and Metcalfe.

Ten years later in 1901 the Saunders family lived in Cheshire at Ashton upon Mersey where their address was 165 Elm Grove. At that time Philip 50 years worked as a domestic gardner. Adeleve 49 looked after her husband, daughter Muriel 17 and a boarder Thomas Southerst 61, an estate agent and collector from Manchester. On the day of the census they also had a visitor, Eliza Knighton, 65 and single, from Alfreton.

Some of the occupations of the Saunders' neighbours were unbrella maker and replacer, coachman-domestic, occasional charwoman, butcher, cattleman on farm, and ventilating and heating engineer. The names were Westerman, Lawson, Ellison, Hampson, Dodd, Henson and Button.

In 1909 Muriel married Jack Bell, and they had a daughter Win in 1912.

Note: Muriel died three days after arriving in Adelaide. She was staying with her first cousin Nell Murray and her husband Jim at 12a Egmont Terrace, Hawthorn. Muriel's place of birth was given as "Chorlton-cum-Hardy, England"
