Biographical Notes

Hide Details Note: Born in Ireland of a Scottish mother and an English soldier father, Anna arrived in South Australia in 1839 on the ship Recovery. Buncrana, her birthplace, was a market and post-town in the parish of Lower Fahan, barony of Ennishowen, county of Donegal and province of Ulster, 11 miles NNW of Londonderry.

In 1853 at Trinity Church Anna was a witness at her sister Fanny Barbara's marriage to Abraham Bairstow.

In September 1856 at Trinity Church Anna married David Chapman, "widower" and "carpenter." Both Anna and David were 28 years old.

"About 1855 the ‎[Moulton]‎ family came to reside in the Mount Barker district, and in 1856 Miss Moulton was married to Mr David Chapman, who at that time was carrying on business as a blacksmith and wheelwright at Mount Barker Springs. Later the couple lived for some years at Callington, from whence they removed to Nairne, where they have resided for about 25 years. The late Mrs Chapman was ever a true and faithful helpmeet to her husband, and many a time, when labourers were scarce, did she in her prime take a turn with the sledge hammer, the paint brush etc. She was a devout Christian, and although never taking a conspicuous part in church work, she nevertheless did a lot of good in an unostentatious way, and in her demise Nairne loses a most valued a highly-respected resident and South Australia a colonist of 63 years standing."
Mt Barker Courier, obituary 1 May 1903, p 2.
