Biographical Notes

Hide Details Note: John was ten years old when he came to South Australia with his parents and six siblings. He was the oldest boy. John followed in his father's occupational footsteps by becoming a miller.

On 28 May 1863 at the Congregational Chapel in Aldinga, John, 24, married pretty Margaret "Maggie" Muirhead, 17, a servant, of Aldinga. Both signed their names. The name of Maggie's father was not given on the marriage registration. The witnesses were J Davy, miller, Aldinga, A Chapman, clerk, Aldinga and H‎[arriet]‎ Shepherd ‎[John's mother]‎ of Aldinga. John and Maggie had no children. We do not know when or where she died. John didn't remarry for many years. I suspect that she died as a complication of either pregnancy or childbirth with a year or two of the marriage.

According to the South Australia Directory from 1876 to 1882 a John Shepherd was a miller and stonedresser at Robert street, Hindmarsh. ‎[Not sure if this is this John or his father]‎ Then in 1884 to 1885, John Shepherd was a miller at Wallaroo. ‎[Also not sure if this is our John]‎

Forty years after his marriage to Maggie Muirhead, John, 65 years, widower of Hindmarsh, married Annie Marie Lockett, 43, a spinster of Adelaide. The fathers were John Shepherd and John Lockett. They were married at St Paul's Church, Pueltney street, Adelaide. The witnesses were Annie's father J Lockett, butcher, Parade, Norwood and M Piggott, nil occupation, of Kent Town. March 16, 1904.

The following information is on John's death registration:
1923 District of Norwood 254
17 December 1923 John Shepherd, male, 85 years, miller, 10 Queen Street, Norwood, born Steep, England, remarried at 64 years, cause of death senility and bronchitis. Death occurred at 10 Queen Street, Norwood. The informant was H. Rosewarne, undertaker of Magill Road, Maylands.

OBITUARY.
Mr. John Shepherd, who died recently at Queen-street, Norwood, was the eldest son of Mr. John Shepherd, of Hindmarsh, and previously of Aldinga. He was born at Steep, Hampshire, on December 16, 1838, and was therefore 85 years old. He, with his parents and the rest of his family, came from England in 1849 by the ship Ascendant. In 1851 Mr. Shepherd went to the Victorian gold diggings, but was not one of the fortunate ones. On returning to South Australia he took up the milling business, and for most of his life he was in that trade at Aldinga, Wallaroo, Blyth, and other places. He was married twice. His second wife was Miss Annie Locket, and she survives him. Mr. Shepherd was of a retiring disposition, and was greatly respected for his genial and kindly disposition.

Shepherd.--The FRIENDS of the late Mr. JOHN SHEPHERD are respectfully informed that his Remains were removed from his late Residence, Queen Street, Norwood, and privately laid to rest in the Payneham Cemetery on THURSDAY, Rev. Hopton officiating.
