Biographical Notes

Hide Details Note: After Charles' unexpected and horrific death at the sawmill in April 1903, Emma stayed on the farm in Guyan township. In the spring of 1910, she was 45 years old and had three of her children at home: Lily 20, Carnot 15 and Gladys.

Her son Butler, his wife Pluma and young daughter Mildred were living on the farm next to them.

According to Bob Caldwell or Claudie Sheets, Emma R. Sheets Bevan was short and fat: 5'6" ‎[that isn't short!]‎ and 170 lbs. ‎[that isn't fat!]‎ After the sawmill accident which killed her husband, she never remarried. When the children grew up she moved to Akron and worked in a restaurant owned by Garrett Sheets ‎(son of Ira Sheets--brother of Claudie)‎. Later in life she lived with Gladys Sheets Caldwell back in Gallia County.

She was a member of Siloam Baptist Church.

Children and other descendants down to the fifth generation of Mrs. Emma Bevan gathered recently to celebrate her 93rd birthday anniversary at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gladys Caldwell. ‎[mother of Bob Caldwell]‎
Children present and their spouses included, Mr. and Mrs. William Stewart, Waynesville; Mr & Mrs Carnot Bevan, Crown City; Mr. Carrie Wells of Columbus; Mr. & Mrs. Butler Bevan, of Northup. Grandchildren present included Norma Baker of Waynesville; Mrs. Glenn Roberts of Chillicothe; a great-granddaughter brought her son, Chaddy, who comprised the 5th. generation.
Others present included Alphonso Sheets ‎[s/o Brice H. & Samantha Willcoxon]‎, Mrs. Bevans's brother and Mrs. Gus Sheets, a friend of the family.

Hide Details Note: MRS. BEVAN DIES AT 94
Mrs. Emma Roseltha Bevan, 94, died at 8:45 p.m. Monday at the home of her daughter, at 508 Fourth Ave. She was a lifelong resident of Gallia Co. Her last illness extended over the past 12 yrs. & her condition worsened in the past week.

She was born in Guyan Twp., on Jan. 16, 1865 to Brice & Samantha Wilcoxen Sheets. There were several brothers & sisters, & she was the last of her immediate family. She was married to Charles Bevan in July, 1882, & he died several years ago ‎[yes, 1903 to be exact!]‎.

Survivors are two sons & three daughters, Butler Bevan of Northup, Cornith ‎[Carnot]‎ Bevan of Crown City, Mrs. Gladys Caldwell with whom she made her home. Mrs. Carrie Wells, also of Gallipolis & Mrs. Lillie Stewart of Waynesville. There are 25 grandchildren....
