Note: Urbana Daily CitizenGeorge W. Rhea George William Rhea, 85, of 214 1/2 East Church Street, Urbana, died Tuesday, August 29, 1989, at 7:53 a.m. in Mercy Memorial Hospital. Born September 14, 1903 in Champaign County, he was a son of Charles Elmer and Christina "Tina" (Schmid) Rhea. He was the owner/operator of the Quality Meat Market from 1959 until his retirement in April 1976. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Urbana. He was a 50-year member of the Harmony Lodge No. 8 F. & A.M., Urbana Chapter No. 34 Royal Arch Masons, Urbana Council No. 59 Royal and Select Masons, Raper Commandery No. 19 Knights Templar, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Champaign County Scottish Rite Association and the Elizabeth M. Hood Chapter 505 Order of the Eastern Star. He had been honored many times for his Masonic contributions. He was one of the first members of Box 13 and had many times provided food for the firemen when there were major fires. An avid Hillclimber fan, he had worked the gates at the Urbana Football and Basketball games for over 50 years. Survivors include his wife, Mabel (Rose), whom he married December 28, 1941; a sister, Blanche A. Rhea of Urbana; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Messiah Lutheran Church, Urbana, with Rev. Larry Donner officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery. The body will lie in state in the church for one hour prior to services. Friends may call Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Walter-Schoedinger Funeral Home. Commandery services will be held Thursday at 6:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church, Urbana.
