Note: Peter Carey went to Paulerspury at about the age of 18-20. He was the first schoolmaster at the school at St. James Church of England. The school had a dozen scholarships for boys who couldn't afford to pay.
Peter Carey was also the parish clerk.
William Carey by Basil Miller, Bethany House Publishers, Minneapolis MN, 1980. "A specimen of his [Peter's] handwriting, which is still extant and is described as free and elegant, indicates that Grandfather Carey was no mere rustic. His oldest son likewise followed his footsteps and became a teacher in the nearby town of Lowcester, though he died at the early age of twenty. Grandfather Peter was so stricken that he followed his son to the grave in two weeks, leaving his widow Ann, and Edmund, then but a boy, to fend for themselves.
Another son of Grandfather Carey had gone to Canada and disappeared as far as the rest of the family was concerned. Edmund was given one of the free school scholarships by his village. He learned easily and devoted himself to the support of his mother [after his father's death]."
