The Hamms lived close to the Sloggetts. Ann's father William Wise was a servant/agricultural labourer on the farm of a Mr. Prout in South Petherwin, district 1b. Shortly thereafter, Ann married her childhood neighour James Sloggett.

In the 1841English census, Ann, eleven years, lived with her father William in South Petherwin, Cornwall. William 40 was an agricultural labourer. Her mother must have died. No siblilngs were in the househhold.
