Oldest Lady in Jersey Dies
It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death, which occurred on Saturday of Mrs. Louisa Buttfield, of 7, Elizabeth Place, who was not only Jersey's oldest lady, but in fact the oldest inhabitant in the whole of the Channel Islands. She was 104 years of age. Despite the passing of the years Mrs. Buttfield was extremely active about the house, and retained most of her faculties. She was described by a neighbour as "a remarkable old lady who possessed a wonderful sense of humour right to the last." ...A Widow--her husband passed away many years ago--Mrs. Buttfield received lots of messages of congratulations when she reached "her century", and also on succeeding birthdays. Among these were telegrams from Royalty. The funeral is to be private, and it is specially requested that there shall be no flowers and no mourning."
