Note: A letter to Louisa, then aged 8-9 years old and newly arrived in England from India, from her father, Jonathan Carey, Camberwell Grove, 11th July 1835:
"My beloved Louisa,
I have not yet left Camberwell but expect to join the ship at...tomorrow. She left the East India docks yesterday. I hope you and Johnny and Willy had a pleasant trip on the Royal William to Margate and Ann too and that you landed without any accident.
I wish to know how you are, especially Willy, I hope he is better and able to run about again. If you or Johnny will write me a letter and address it to me as I shall mention on the other side [On board the William Jardine care of Capt. Crosbie],it will reach me on the ship as we go out of the river. Mind you and Willy and Johnny give me all the news when you write to me in India.
...Your luggage is all gone to Mr. Gotch at Hemel Hemstead, and you and Johnny and Willy are to be with Mr. Gotch at Hemel Hemstead on Monday the 2nd inst.
Now my dear Louisa, take care and improve your time. When you commence your studies try to get forward and give as little trouble as you can to those who will take care of you. I must wish you farewell, the Lord be with you and direct you and bless you.
I enclose a few lines for Johnny and a few lines for Willy. Your most affectionate Papa,
Note: Anna and John were married by Benjamin P. Batten at the Baptist Chapel in the Parish of Hemel Hempstead, Herts. The witnesses were as follows: Jonathon Carey, Mary Anne Wells, William Buttfield, Frederick Mason and C. G./S. Mason.
