Biographical Notes | Meigs County, Ohio, USA
Note: 1850 Sutton Township: John, 44, and Miriam, 27, had living with them George R. Ackley, 18, a farmer born in Ohio [possibly John's son by a previous marriage] and Mary L. Hoffman, 60, born in Virginia. [Mary could be John's mother-in-law from his first marriage.] 1860 Racine: J.B. Ackley, 53, was a physician with real estate valued at $1000 and personal assets worth $9000. His wife Miriam was 30 and had one child, Catherine, who was one year old. Catherine was born in Virginia, so the Ackleys must have arrived back in Meigs Co. only recently. Living with the Ackleys were Maria Wolf, 9, and Hannah Robinson, a seamstress. There were many Wolfs living in the area, but we don't know the connection with Maria.
1870 Sutton Township: Jeremiah Ackley, a physician, was now 64 years old. Miriam and Catherine are not mentioned, which probably means that they had died, although Catherine could have married. Keeping house for Jeremiah was Sarah Ackley, 45, a daughter, niece or his second wife. She was born in Pennsylvania, as was Sarah Woods, 75. Miriam Wolf 19 "helps at home," and was born in Ohio. This must be the "Maria" Wolf of the 1860 census. Jeremiah's assets were $12,000 in real estate and $1000 in personal estate; Sarah Ackley had $25,000 in real estate and $1000 in personal assets, which is noteworthy because very few women at that time noted any monetary assets.
