While drilling wells at Syracuse, Ohio, he met Mariam Thomas, daughter of Elias Thomas and Mariam Williams. Mariam was born in Neith,Wales. She and John were married April 16, 1868 and subsequently had ten children.

John Hudson Smith was possibly the Smith who was listed in the 1860 census as living in the Virginia House, a boarding house run by W.W. Harper and his wife.
