Note: At the time of the 1850 federal census taken in Walnut Township, Gallia Co., Ohio, William was 21 yrs and Mary Ann was 18 yrs. William was a farmer who owned real estate to the value of $2,000. He and Mary had one child, Noah, who was nine months old. Also in their home was a toddler named Susanna Neal, aged two years. It is possible that she was orphaned by the terrible cholera epidemic of 1849.
By 1860 the Clarks had moved to Harrison township in the same county. William 31 years still had real estate valued at $2,000 plus personal estate valued at $800. Mary at 29 years had three children at home: Angeline seven, Letitia four, and Charles two years old. Noah must have died.
In 1870 William's assets and family had both grown. His property was worth $3,000 and he had personal assets of $850.00. William 41 years and Mary A. 39 years had the following children: Lovenia A. (Angeline?) 16, a school teacher; Letitia 14; Charles W. eleven, John F. nine, Jennie B. five and Eugene C. two.
By 1880 William and Mary Ann had only two children at home: Jennie B. 14 and Eugene E. 12. Eugene, like his father, was a farmer. Jennie was just "at home;" however both Jennie and Eugene had attended school within the year.
Mary Ann died in the winter of 1890. Fifteen months later William married Rhoda Walter. He was then 62 years of age, and Rhoda was 33. They had only eight years together before William died in May 1899. I believe that they had several children.
William's death date on his tombstone at Dickey Chapel-Mt Pleasant Cemetery is May 8, 1899. He is buried next to his first wife Mary Ann.
