Birth:2 September 19212924 -- Sydney Street, Willoughby, New South Wales, Australia Death:21 July 1988 (Age 66) -- Boggabri, New South Wales, Australia
Note: During W.W.2 John enlisted in the Artillery 2nd A.I.F. at Sydney and served in New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. After demobilisation he worked for Horrocks (Australia) at Sydney, became sales manager and travelled overseas for the firm in 1959. He was also the N.S.W. representative for the Junior Chamber of Commerce. When at Adelaide on business he visited the Stevensons at Clarence Park. He and Valmai had been married 14 years before their first living child was born. Sadly, both little son and daughter were lost. Only months before Adrian drowned he fell overboard from their yacht one weekend. John promptly dived in to the rescue, while Valmai and Baby Melissa were left to go round and round in circles as she knew nothing of boats. Only John's shouted instructions had her halt it, and he and the boy were able to get safely aboard. They had been living at Military Road, Dover Heights (Sydney), but when Melissa died they left the house bereft of both children, for the North Shore. From 1962 John was with Calico Printers Australia of Sydney and had several other positions before he retired in 1981. He had been much involved with the Masonic Lodge and the Royal Sydney Yacht Club. In his last illness, cancer, he was cared for devotedly by Pat and insisted in spite of frailty in giving Vanessa away at her 1987 wedding. He was hospitalised toward the end.
He and his family had been living at Boggabri for the previous four years at 190 Merton Street in retirement. He was interred at the Boggabri Cemetery. Pat moved to Narrabri nearby.
