Biographical Notes |
Note: Christopher Samuel was named for his grandfathers, Chrirtopher Wilson and Samuel Reeves, but was referred to as "Sam" within the family. He was educated at Hahndorf Academy. Just as his brothers Arthur, Oscar and Osmond eschewed farming, he too was at Adelaide, as a "warehouseman" in the early 1880's probably at G. & R. Wills, living at the Edward Street, Norwood house. He must already have been suffering from tuberculosis. Early in 1887 he went to Sydney for a holiday, caught a severe cold which aggravated his ailment and he returned to die in a few months. He died on 4 Dec 1887 at "New Westbrook", Mt. Barker, aged 28 years. He was interred at the St. James Blackiston churchyard. His mother Ellen purchased a double plot there on path VI. The grave has no headstone and is divided by the path from the plot of a local family, well known in Sam's day, immediately behind the detached bell tower. As has been previously noted, his mother joined him there in 1901.
