Note: In South Australia for over 26 years Sarah wrote to her old family lawyer, Aldridge of Poole, of her life in the new land. The firm bundled the letters up 140 years later and posted them to the Adelaide Archives where they are held at Mortlock Library. She was 36 and John 31 when they arrived. During the voyage she fell ill of cholera and was to suffer recurrences for many years. From the 20 pounds she brought with her together with John, they acquired a considerable amount of land, the first in 1844, 80 acres at two pounds per acre. Her last letter dated 29 Nov 1867 tells of the visit of Prince Alfred, son of Queen Victoria and how she rode horseback 12 miles from Klemzig to see him at Adelaide. She was then 69.
