Biographical Notes | Jackson County, West Virginia, USA
Note: 1850 Jackson Roloff 28 yrs and his wife Lucretia 30 - both born in Ohio [wrong] - lived on a farm next to Mary Roloff, 70 yrs. I think that Mary was Jackson's mother. At that time Jackson and Lucretia had five children: Martha 12, Margaret six, Sarah five, Elizabeth three and [It's a boy!] John, who was five months old. 1860: The Roloffs had three more children. All in all there were Martha 17, Sarah 15, Elizabeth eleven, John ten, Jane eight, Rachel five and Jackson Jr. one. Grandma Mary Roloff, 82 years, still lived next door. Lucretia was born in Pennsylvania, as was Mary. Where was Lucretia born? We have several versions of her place of birth.
1870: Jackson Co, had now become part of West Virginia. Jackson was a farmer who owned real estate worth $3,500 and personal estate worth $800. This time Lucretia's place of birth was Indiana. The children were John 19, Jane 17, Rachel 15, Robert J. eleven and grandmother Mary Roloff who was 95! Also in the household were Jane Hale five years, born in Ohio, and Jack Taylor 22 yrs and also born in Ohio.
1880: Jackson lived in Ravenswood, Jackson Co, where he was a dealer in lumber. He was 56 yrs old, and Lucretia was 59. Jennie 16 and Rachel E. five were granddaughters. Both girls were born in Ohio. Lucretia was born in Virginia. Lucretia, it notes, could not read or write.
