Biographical Notes |
Note: In 1860 Emily, aged 31, and her daughters, Carrie two and Emily one were living in the household of Abial Hobart and his wife, Sarah. Abial was 51, Sarah 33. One might guess that Sarah is the second wife of Abial, and that Emily, recently widowed, has come to live with her sister, Sarah. Abial was born in New Hampshire and Sarah in New York. Laura, 22, Abram, 20, and Alfred, 14, were possibly Abial's children by his first wife and Nettie, 2, is Sarah's child. All were born in New York State. Abial had real estate valued at $2,500 and personal assets worth $1,800. At this time it is unusual for a woman to list personal assets, however, Sarah is reported as having $400 in her own name. Ten years later Emily was now 40 years old and married to widower William Harper and lived in Hartford, West Virginia. She had four children by her husband's first marriage still at home: David, 24, Harriet, 17, Amanda, 15 and Thomas, 13 plus the two children from her previous marriage, Carrie Norris13 and Emily, called Millie, 12. William and Emily have had two children of their own, William four and Theodocia three, both born in West Virginia. They also cared for Nora Burgess, daughter of Will's daughter Imogene who died in 1869.
In 1880 in Hartford, Mason Co, West Virginia, Will and Emily were now both teaching school. William's son, David, was still at home, aged 34. He was a brick mason. Also still at home were Thomas, Carrie, Millie, Willie, Theodosia and Nora. In this census Nora's surname was given as Burgess rather than Harper as indicated in the previous census. Also Nora's relationship to William is given as granddaughter.
By 1900 William Harper had died and Emily had moved to Chicago to live with her daughter, Docie, and her husband, Justus Chandler. Docie and Justus had two children, Lola nine and Justus seven. Nora, 32 and still single, was living at home with the family. Her relationship with Justus was given as sister-in-law.
Grandmother Emily's parents were both born in Massachusetts.
