Note: On his World War I draft registration card, James Harlan Mills was described as tall with a slender build, blue eyes and fair hair. His occupation was vulcanizer. The draft registration was taken in Gallipolis on 12 December 1918. His "nearest relative" was his mother Mrs Ed Mills, and his address was 918 Second Avenue, Gallipolis, Ohio. In the 1920 federal census report for Gallipolis, Ohio,"Harland" Mills was 21 years old and living at home with his parents Edward L. and Grace E. Mills plus his sister Berenice M. 16 and brother Thomas E. 13. Harland's occupation was "Vulcanizer." He had his own shop.
On June 2, 1930 we unexpectedly find that Harlan has arrived in New York on the ship Arcadian from Bermuda. His postal address was in Huntington, West Virginia. While he was away, Kate and James stayed with Kate's mother Essie Middleswart Alexander in Meigs Co., Ohio.
The question is, what was Harlan doing in Bermuda?
