Note: In the 1900 federal census John Cook, 43, was a railroad engineer. He and Mary E. lived in Parkersburg, West Virginia where they had one child, Virginia, born in June 1890. Also living with them was Nellie R., John's sister-in-law, who was born in December 1849 and single.
We don't know when John died; but we know that Mary travelled west by herself. By 1930 she was 75 years old and living in California with her daughter's family, Virginia and Silas Vernon Phelps and their three children.
Note: Mary Alexander Cook had a daughter Virginia Cook Phelps, who lived in Parkersburg before moving to California. Virginia Phelps' son was "Buster" Phelps. We have photos of him. His real name was Silas Vernon Phelps. No wonder they called him Buster!
Mide Ginther McKnight in 1978 told me (Martha Brown Shepherd) that "Aunt Mary Cook was a beautiful singer. She went to Parkersburg, then to California. She had a light case of diabetes. She was one of Aunt Alice's favorite people. I believe that Aunt Alice [Alice Brown Banks Chapman] went to California once or twice. It was probably to visit Mary Cook."
