Biographical Notes |
Note: At the time of the 1881 England census, James McKenna aged 22 and wife Mary A 23 lived in Kettering, Northants, where James worked in the shoe industry. The first word of his occupation is "Shoe", followed by "Reoater," or something close to it. Mary had a baby girl Alice who was two months old. Their address was 4 & 5 Gibraltar Place. The next census taken in England in 1901 shows the McKenna family in Kettering at 42 Nelson Street. James 42 was a town postman; Alice W 20 a boot fitter; Angas R a postman; Robert C 15 a telegraph messenger; Eleanor B 15; Willie eleven; Daisy nine and Ellen Rouse 73, mother-in-law, a widow.
They lived in a working class neighbourhood with employment in which the shoe industry was a significant employer. Tom Porter was a boot dresser; John Winkle a boot maker; Walter Winkle a boot nailer and Harry Winkle a boot eyeletter; William Wallis a boot finisher as was his son Ernest. This was all from the same page as the McKennas.
In 1901 the McKennas continued to live in Kettering, where James was the Town Postman. Their children were Alice W. 20, a boot fitter; Angas R. 18, a postman; Robert C. 15, a telegraph messenger; Eleanor B. 15; Willie eleven, and Daisy nine. Mother-in-law Ellen Rouse 73 was also in the household at 42 Nelson Street.
