In March 1941 John tried to enlist in the RAAF but his application was rejected on medical grounds.
In January 1942 he was accepted into active service in the Navy where he served as an ordinary seaman and then an able seaman. He served on air-sea rescue, boom patrols, sea-ward defence and submarine detection ‎(his speciality)‎.
In May 1944 he was posted to Harbour Defence Motor Launch HDML 1324 and participated in two operations to Japanese held Timor.
