Biographical Notes |
Note: Sarah married Robert Brown and had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth. The family threesome sailed to South Australia on the "Derwent," arriving on 23 January 1849. Robert was a former bailiff of the Duke of Bedford. The Brown family had purchased land near Normanville, South Australia, and their abode was called Mt Pleasant Farm.
Their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, died at the age of 21 years on 7 March 1863, the victim of typhoid fever. She is buried in the old Wesleyan cemetery at Normanville. Her mother Sarah also died in 1863. Robert lived with relatives until his death in 1884.
Sarah and Robert produced wine on their farm, following a family tradition. In a letter to "Aunt Sarah Brown" written by H. Buttfield of Huntingdon, England on 9 February 1857, the writer was quoted as "supplying something for weddings amongst the aristocracy," presumably flowers, clothing or gifts.
John Clayton, Sarah's maternal grandfather, left in his will 500 pounds to his daughter Fanny and 300 pounds to his granddaughter Sarah Brown.
