Note: Joseph James was the eldest son of James and Mary Hughes Buttfield. The date of his birth is not known, and the date of his death was about 1934. He lived in south-east London, and most of his working life was spent with the well-known biscuit manufacturer Peak Frean.
After the death of Joseph in 1934, his widow Matilda Maud continued to live in the south Norwood district until 1944, when she died as the indirect result of a "flying bomb."
Note: 1891 Camberwell: Joseph 38 years and Matilda 37 years had four children at home: Harold J. nine, Sidney J. seven, Edith M. six, and Arthur W. three. All but little Arthur were "scholars." The father, Joseph, was a clerk. Included in the household was Elizabeth, 36 years, a "visitor" and "domestic lady's maid" from Yorkshire.
1901 Lewisham: Joseph 48 was a clerk in a biscuit manufacturing firm. Matilda 47 years had five children at home: Harold 19, merchant's clerk; Sydney 17, accountant's clerk; Edith M. 16; Edgar G. nine; and Leonard Frank eight.
