Biographical Notes | Ohio, USA
Note: 1900-06-13 Gallipolis, Gallia Co: Joseph, 29, was living with his parents. His father, Frank, head of the household, identified himself as a landlord. Joe was a farmer. 1910-04-26 Hamilton, Warren Co: Joe was now 49 and single. Living with him was an Irish servant, Maggie Doyle, 45, and her 16 year old son, Elmer.
1920-01-02 Gallipolis, Gallia Co: Joe was now married to Margaret, 57, and had a daughter, Julia, 13. Joe's mother, Julia E, was also living with them. Daughter, Julia, had not been mentioned in the 1910 census in Joe's bachelor household. Possibly she was Margaret's daughter by her previous marriage to JW Morgan. (By 1900 Margaret and JW had 9 children, all still living at that time. The youngest was born in 1895.) Perhaps Julia was Joe's daughter from a previous relationship. Perhaps she was adopted. The name Julia E suggests that she was definitely Joe's daughter, if not Margaret's.
1930-03-30 Boys Industrial Home, Hocking, Fairfield Co: The Boys Industrial Home was a prison. Most people listed in the census were identified as "Inmate". There was also an "Officer" with his "Wife" and "Son". Joe Donnally was uniquely called a "Lodger". He was 59, had been married 33 years and was nightwatchman. (Interestingly the industry category was "cottage".) Where were Margaret and Julia? Answer: they were living with Joe's mother in Gallipolis.
1930-04-03 Gallipolis: Four days later when the census was taken in Gallipolis, Joe was home on leave and was recorded there at his mother's home on First Avenue. Joe gave his occupation as "guard" at the Boys Industrial School. As well as Joe's family, Julia's daughter (and Joe's sister), Lyda Cherrington, was also there. She was 60 and married although her husband was not there. This was probably Lyda's second marriage.
