Biographical Notes |
Note: William first appears in the English census of 1841 when he was a babe of seven months. William and Harriet, his parents were 26 years old, and his father was a printer. They lived on Grantham Street in the borough of Lambeth in Surrey, which is surely London today. In the 1851 English census taken in Peckham, Surrey, we find the William Fosbrook Carey family living at 62 Shanton Street, Old Kent Road. In parenthesis it appears to say "2 Christian cottages." William and his wife Harriet were both 36 years old and had a family of five children who were born every two years: William Mason ten, Eustace eight, Harriet six, Edmund four and Margaret Lassam Carey two. The three oldest children were scholars. They also had a visitor in the household, Richard John Cormack, aged 24, who like William was a "Printer's Reader."
By the 1861 census, the Careys had moved to Kensington in London where their address was 17 Brunswick Terrace. William's occupation was Printer and Bookseller. He and Harriet, both 47 years old, had eight children under the age of twenty, including one set of twins.
Their children were William M. 20, Harriet 15, Edmund 13, Margaret L. ten, Emily and Mary F. seven, Peter five and Annie three years.
Occupations of some neighbours were Tobacconist, Coachman and Stableman. The Careys lived next to the mews.
In 1871 William Mason Carey (30 years) and his wife Annie (28 years) live in Camberwell, Surrey, where William is a Journeyman Printer. In the household are their two young children, Emily five years and William E. three years. Annie's sister Emma J. Copsey aged 15 is also living with them. Emma was born in Bayswater, Middlesex [London] and is a Dressmaker by trade.
William (40) and Annie (38) are still in Camberwell with a larger family of seven children. Their address is 157 Southampton Street. The children are Emily 15, William 13, Eustace 11, Edith nine, Louise six, Arthur four and Horace one year old. William's occupation is Master Printer.
By 1891 William's wife Annie had died, and he had remarried Grace (42 years). Three sons were at home: William E. 23, Printer; Arthur H. 14, Shipping Agent's Clerk; and Horace S. eleven years old.
