Note: In 1841 John 50 was a carpenter in Laneast, Cornwall. His wife Margery 40 had five children at home: Thomas 17, James 13, Ann seven and John four. All were born in Cornwall. Next door to them was Margery's father, Thomas Bray, 79 years. Also close to them was their son Richard 24 years, also a carpenter, and his wife Charity 15 years.
In 1851 John 59 was still working as a carpenter. Margery 53 had at home James 23, a carpenter; Ann 15, a farmer's servant; John 13, a scholar; and Harriet seven months, a grandchild. They resided at 45 Downhead.
Their son Thomas lived nearby. He was 27 and a carpenter. His wife Catherine was 26, and their son Richard one year old. Thomas was born in Laneast as was their baby Richard; but Catherine was born in South Petherwin, a village south of Launceston. Laneast and South Petherwin were about eight miles apart.
Just a few years later, the family moved to South Australia.
