Note: Mr. David M. Gates and Mahala B. Armstrong were married in Patriot, Gallia County, in April 1842. They have had thirteen children: Jerusha A., Mary E. 1845, James R. 1846, Minerva C. 1848, Joseph P. 1849, Stephen 1851, Albert V. 1853, John M. 1856, Howard M. 1858, Irene C. 1860, Alice L. 1861, Franklin S. 1863, and Anna B.B. 1865.
Mr. Gates was born in Perry Township, Gallia County, Ohio December 8, 1816. He is a son of Stephen and Jerusha (Perry) Gates, who settled here at an early date.
His wife was born in Walnut township, Gallia county, June 7, 1822, and was the daughter of Loudon and Bethsheba (Ray) Armstrong, who also came to this county at an early date. Mrs. Gates died September 2, 1872.
Mr. Gates held the office of trustee and land appraiser. His business is farming and stock-raising. Address: Patriot, Gallia Co., Ohio.
