Biographical Notes |
Note: William was born in Virginia, probably on Sinking Creek, Craig Co., Virginia. In the 1850 federal census William and Sarah Nida were living in Giles Co., Virginia (20th district). William, 44 years and a farmer, owned real estate worth $800.00. Sarah, aged 39, had a large household to supervize with ten children: Susanna 19, Elizabeth 20, Delila 16, Sarah M. 14, Anthony 12, Ellen ten, William H. nine, Telitha six, Mary Ann two and a male baby [John Calvin] three months old. Seven girls and three boys! It was hard to decipher, but it looked as though G. W. W. Cass one year old was also in the household.
At the time of the 1830 census he was in Gallia County, Ohio and by 1832 he owned property there as shown by a deed wherein he and his wife "Sarah Nida" conveyed property to John Waugh (D.B. 12, p. 294). The acknowledgement of this deed was made in Giles County, Virginia, which would indicate that he was [might have been] living there at that time. Also, at that time, Sinking Creek was in Giles Co. (Craig County was later formed from Giles.)
It is said that William lived in Ohio for a while before going west with his brothers John and Henry about 1860. One motive for going west was to avoid serving in the Civil War. The family first settled in Illinois, where William is buried. Later the family went on to Spickard, Missouri, where Sarah is buried. William and Sarah had 14 children (including Telithia Cumi 1844 and Mary Lintischia 1857).
In 1860 William and Sarah were farming in Benton Twp., Wayne Co., Iowa, near Corydon. William was then 54 years old and Sarah 49. At home were their son William H. 18 plus two young girls: Sarah S. Harless six and Mary L. Niday two. Mary L. was their daughter. Sarah Harless was probably the daughter of Mary L. Nida Harless.
Later the family went on to Spickard, Missouri, where Sarah is buried. William and Sarah had 15 children, including Telithia Cumi and Mary Lintischia. I give them full credit for creative names.
