Note: 1900 Meigs Co., Ohio: Alfred, a farmer, and his wife Emma were 34 and 32 respectively. They had two children, Maggie, 10, and Homer 9. 1910 Mason Co., West Virginia: Alfred and Emma had moved from Meigs Co., Ohio, to Mason Co., West Virginia. Maggie was now 20 yrs and Homer 18. Alfred's occupation was very difficult to read on the census form, but I think it was "management."
1920 Mason Co., West Virginia: Alfred, 54, and Emma, 52, are still living in Mason Co. where Alfred is a "nursery man in a fruit orchard." Indeed, having learned the nursery business from his father, Alfred and his brother W.A., developed a large fruit nursery and orchard business. At one time they owned five orchards in Mason County. "In 1926 an Apple Blossom Festival was held under the auspices of the Gold interests...The weather was fine, and to quote an observer, 'a veritable ocean of apple blossoms greeted the eyes of everyone.'" (Mildred Gibbs)
1930 Mason Co., West Virginia: After the death of his wife Emma, Alfred, 64, has remarried a much younger Margaret, 38. They have been married for two years. Alfred's son Homer, 39, is living with them.
