Note: Civil War Records, David Davis' Civil War Records record his birthdate as Dec. 24th AND Dec. 25th, 1841. There is one document included that David takes an oath, and has had notarized, a statement o f birth as December 24, 1841 and two witnesses swear that they viewed the page in the family bible that lists date as Dec. 24, 1841.
From his Civil War Records: He was 20 years old, stood 5" 6" and was light complexion with dark hair and hazel eyes. He was Appointed 1st Corporal on Aug. 11, 1863.

"David D. Davis, an influential citizen of Harrison Township, was born in Wales, December 25, 1848. His parents were John D. and Mary (Richards) Davis. The subject of this sketch was united in the holy bonds of matrimony with Catherine Griffiths, in February, 1872. Mrs. Davis was born in Wales in 1850. Four children have come to bless and brighten their home, in the order given below: Reese, born May 31, 1873; John, August 10, 1875; Daniel, August 11, 1877; and Mary, March 5, 1880. The parents of Mrs. Davis were Rees D. and Mary (Davis) Griffiths. They settled in Gallia County in 1854. Mr. Davis was in the late war, enlisting in Company D., 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 15, 1862, serving with that command about one year, when he was transferred to the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, and served until the close of the war. He is a farmer by profession, with post office address at Patriot Post Office, Ohio".
Mr. David D. Davis, of Harrison township, died Monday afternoon, having been ill for sometime with Bright's disease. A brief service will be held at his home Wednesday morning, then the remains in charge of Mr. Will Phillips will be taken to Tyn Rhos church at Cora where regular services will be conducted at 1 o'clock, with burial at church cemetery.
The Newspaper Obituary of David. D. Davis
" David D. Davis was born in Wales, Dec. 25, 1841, departed this life in Gallia Co., O., March 30, 1914, aged 72yrs., 3mos. and 5 days. He was united in marriage with Catherine Griffith in the year 1872. To this union 5 children were born, 3 sons and 2 daughters. One son has preceded him, his wife has also crossed over and brother and one sister of the deceased still live, Thos. D. Davis and Anna D. Edwards. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War being a member of Co. D., 1st Regiment O.H.A. He was also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. To die a Christian death was the great purpose of his life. He so blended graces and good qualities so combined the traits and characteristics which distinguish men to be worthy of Antony's compliments to Brutus: "His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world - this was a man".

Note: David Davis died without a will. His estate was probated in Gallia County Probate Court in April, 1914.
The Letter of Administration shows that son, John Davis, was appointed administrator. David's next of kin listed are John Davis, son, Northup, Ohio; Daniel Davis, son, Northup, Ohio; Mary Davis, daughter, Northup, Ohio; Rachel Davis, daughter, Northup, Ohio, and, Ralph Davis, grandson, Northup, Ohio. The Administrator's Bond lists John Davis, Daniel Davis and Charles F. Phillips to inventory David's "moneys, goods, chattels, rights and credits of the deceased", pay his debts and give a true account of the administration within 12 months, pay any balance due.
John Davis, Administrator petitioned the court on May 13, 1914 for a Private Sale of Personal Property of the estate of David D. Davis. "And the petitioner alleges that said sale would be for the advantage of said estate, for the following reasons": "that said sale would be less expensive and that said property is worth more as a whole than it would be if sold as separate items and your petitioner says that it would yield more money and be more satisfactory to all concerned if privately sold".
