Note: Horace Sidney Harcourt was born 9th February, 1869.
He was educated at St Peter's College. He worked at the Union Bank and in the late 1800s embezzled a sum of money from that bank. To avoid prosecution, he "disappeared" with the help of a relative called Mrs Chibnall [his sister] who lived at Middleton. He had a brother whose name was Ernest Howell. Kathleen was born to Horace Harcourt and his wife, Elizabeth (nee Martin) at Wilcannia, NSW in 1898. Kathleen was the oldest of their 5 children. Horace worked for the council at Wilcannia. The family then moved to White Cliffs, even more remote than Wilcannia. Lucy was the youngest, born in 1912, at Woodend in Victoria. Elizabeth died in 1917, by which time the family had moved back to Adelaide. They lived near Prospect. Horace married again and lived in his later years at Pennington. He died on 11th May, 1960. Horace Howell was generally believed to have died in South Africa. However, the reality seems to be that, to escape the law, he changed his name to Harcourt and "hid" in outback NSW, where he moved around with his family until he felt it was safe for him to return to South Australia.
