Frederick served in Co. B 173rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted 8 September 1864. His rank was musician. He was discharged after 10 months of service with a disability: catarrh of head.

1920: Fred and Augusta Klages, both 73 years, were living in Walnut Township where Fred was a farmer. ‎(A special note says that both immigrated in 1862 and were naturalized in 1866.)‎ Two sons, Kerry and Fred, Jr., both single, were also living with their parents.
