Note: In 1851 William and Sophia "Painter" lived in Gwennap, a village southeast of Redruth, where William worked as a miner. Their address appeared to be Greensplat. At that time they had four children: Catherine eight, Emily five, John W. two, and Samuel, four months old. Three of the children were born in Cornwall, but baby John was born in Devon at Ashburton. Ashburton is a sizeable town on the River Dart east of the Dartmoor Forest.
Many of their neighbours were either miners or agricultural labourers, who were named Richards, Sanders, Reed, Treweek and Thomas.
Gwennap is but a small village, but there was more than one Painter family. After the 1851 census I cannot find any of William A. and Sophia's family in Cornwall.
