Note: Interesting to Many Witnesses and Spectators
Erie Sheets was found not guilty Wednesday evening about 8:30 after the jury had deliberated the case for six hours.
Sheets was charged with having shot to death a neighbor, Aaron Sheets. No denial of the killing was made by the defense, but the motive was the point at issue. The state endeavored to prove that Erie shot Aaron following a quarrel over some moonshine whisky. The defense asserted that Aaron Sheets had endeavored to force his attention upon Mrs. Erie Sheets and the fatal shooting resulted.
The case had passed through the Common Pleas, Appellate and Supreme courts and was sent back here for re-trial. The state represented by Prosecutor Fred Cherrington & Attorneys, Switzer & Johnston. Erie Sheets' counsel were Attorneys Henry W. Cherrington of this city and A.R. Johnson of Ironton. More than a hundred witnesses were examined during the three days' trial and the court room was filled with spectators at all sessions.
Erie Sheets has been residing in Scioto county with his family since his release on bond.
