Note: In the 1850 federal census, Sarah and Moses are living in Raccoon township where Moses is a farmer with real estate worth $3,000. Sarah has three children at home: Sophronia A. 18, Samuel L. 15 and Hiram L. six. There are other people in the household, including Martha M. Warner 26 and her daughter Mary M. four.
In 1860 Sarah at 63 years is a widow. She is living on a farm next to her son Hiram L. McCarley. Her assets include real estate valued at $3,600.00 and personal assets worth $200. Sarah died the next year.
Her tombstone says that Sarah McCarley was 82 years at the time of her death in 1861; however, that would make her 18 years older than Moses. Can this be correct? No.
It appears that the date on the stone was recorded incorrectly. According to the Gallia County Death Records, Sarah A. McCarley died aged 63 years, 11 months and 8 days on April 5, 1891. That is the same date of death as on the stone, which of course, would make her over ninety years old--not 63!!
