Note: In the federal census of 1870 Elnathan 33 years and Mary 30 years were farming in Raccoon township of Gallia county, Ohio. They had five children at home: Sarah 12, John nine, Laura seven, Thomas five and Hiram two.
Later, in the 1900 census we see that both Elnathan and Mary J. were born in 1838, one month apart. They had been married for 43 years. Mary had had five children all of whom were living. Elnathan's parents were born in West Virginia (then Virginia); Mary's were born in Virginia (father) and Ohio (mother).
By 1910 Mary had died. Elnathan was 74 years old and widowed.
