Note: Esther wrote a biography of her husband Eustace Carey. In 1841 Esther was living at Marlowes in Hemel Hempstead. Eustace and daughter Annie were away. Esther had Eustace Jr six years old at home. To help with the housework was a servant named Sophia.
By the 1851 census Esther and Eustace were based in London at Kentish Town, St Pancras. Their address was 3 Eastcotte Place. Esther 49 years was a "Dissenting Minister's Wife." Both of her children were at home: Annie 26 years was born in America, while Eustace 16 years was born in Camberwell, Surrey. A friend, Michael Foster 15 years was visiting them at the time of the census. Their servant was Mary Childs 21 years. They lived next door to the Curate of Trinity St Pancras, Thomas King.
In 1861 Esther was living in Widnes, Lancashire. By then she was a widow who supported herself by being a "Fundholder." Her son Eustace 26 years was an "Analytical Chemist." Clara Nutter 14 years was visiting them. Ann Whateley 25 years was the general servant.
Occupations of some of their neighbours were organist, bricklayer, laundress, charwoman and joiner.
In 1871 Esther was living in Appleton, Widnes, at Caew Villa, 26 Lower House next to the Appleton Academy. She was 69 years old and an annuitant. Alice Dickinson 29 was the general servant.
Still in Widnes in 1881, Esther was living at 17 Kaludah Terrace on Albert Road. She was listed as 70 years, but she was really 79. She had a domestic servant named Ellen Lawton.
Esther died in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, in October 1884. She was 83 years old.
