Biographical Notes | Guyan Township, Gallia County, Ohio, USA
Note: On 20 November 1850, Angus Ruffner lived in Guyan Township. He was 38 yrs old and born in Ohio. A farmer, he owned $200 of real estate. His wife Elizabeth, born in Virginia, was 33 years old. Their daughter Catharine was 15. She, too, had been born in Virginia. In 1860 on 7 August, Angus and family were in Guyan Township. Angus 48 yrs had propspered with $3,000 of real estate owned and $500 of personal estate. Elizabeth, 39 yrs, had four people at home: Sophiah Parish 47 [Elizabeth's sister, born cir. 1813] , Emily Gotham 18, Sophiah Colwell six and Elias Winterington four years.
It is interesting to note that the first person listed on this household was Isaac Brumfield, 18 years old. Usually the head of the household was listed first.
Sophiah Colwell is very likely the daughter of Angus and Elizabeth's daughter Catharine, who married William W. Colwell in 1835. It seems that poor Catharine died about the time that her daughter Sophiah was born.
In the 1870 census of Gallia County, Angus Ruffner's address was Mercerville. He was 54 yrs old and a coal digger, who had been born in [West] Virginia. His wife, Elizabeth, 52 yrs old, was born in Ohio. Living with them were Elias W. Caldwell 13, a day laborer; and Sophia Caldwell, 16 yrs, who "assists in keeping house."
Two residences from Angus, next to Gilbert Haner and the Oliver Caverlees lived Joseph Ruffner 61 born (West) Virginia and Margaret 70. I suspect that he is Angus Ruffner's brother. Living with them was young Susan Henry, eleven years old.
