Note: Alice was brought up by her aunt and uncle (Blanche and George Frederick Buttfield) after the early death of her father in 1887. Two of her siblings, Mabel and Gilbert also grew up with Aunt Blanche and Uncle George. When Blanche decided to leave Yorke Penninsula to go to Adelaide, Alice and Mabel went with her to Magill, where their home was called "The Nook." On the property they had a large orchard and a dairy. They also ran a milk round. After Aunt Blanche died in 1946, the two sisters gave up the milk round and dairy work. They supplemented their income by taking in boarders.
After Mabel's death at The Nook in 1953, Alice stayed on until her own health failed when she spent a year or two in hospital.
